"It hurts to get overlooked, but I believe this is all part of the journey"

Our Getting To Know series continues as we speak to Aston Villa's #1 Goalkeeper, Sian Rogers.

Sian Rogers & Aston Villa have been one of the most in form clubs in The UK over the past 18 months, after a strong finish to the 2018/2019 season, their form continued into this season where they're setting the pace at the top of The Women's Championship.

Sian started by telling us "The environment at Villa is positive and everyone at the club is wanting to get the club to where it should be in The WSL. Also, the environment we've created as a group allows you to improve as a player. To be part of this promotion push is amazing and exciting. With the backing that the club is giving us, we know as a group we have to repay them by working hard."

Aston Villa recently announced the arrival of one of the biggest names in women's football, Eni Aluko. Sian added "When I knew about Eni's arrival, I was really pleased because it showed the intent of the club to bring someone in who has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the women's game. Eni is someone we can all learn from."

This season, Sian & Aston Villa have only conceded 11 goals in the league out of 14 games whilst maintaining their unbeaten league record. Another statistic that Sian is proud of is her current record of 354 minutes without conceding a goal. "My target in pre-season was to be as consistent as possible and make big saves at key points in the game to help the team reach its goal."

Sian recently extended her contract with Next Gen Sport Solutions, we asked our Managing Director, Reece Land, for some words on Sian, "Sian is amazing! You've only got to look at her statistics from the last 18 months and she has to be up there with the best goalkeepers in the country, the numbers speak for themselves and she's been rewarded with a long term contract at Aston Villa for this. If she carries on like she is, it'll be impossible for England not to recognise what she's doing on the pitch."

Sian added to these comments by saying "I have a great relationship with Reece and we both have a good understanding of what I need to do to improve. He always has my best interests in mind when making decisions meaning that allows me to focus on my football. I'm keen for my development to continue and push towards the highest levels I can reach and hopefully within the next couple of years I'll be a fully fledged international. It hurts to get overlooked after the form I've been in but I believe this is all part of the journey and something that I'll keep pushing myself towards and striving for. But for now, promotion is my main target."

We asked Sian some quick fire questions:

Q) Who are your closest friends in football?

A) Jade Richards & Mel Johnson. I know I could go to them about anything that I needed to talk about.

Q) Do you have any pre-match rituals?

A) To be honest, I don't have any superstitions or rituals. I believe if I prepare well enough in the lead up to a game training wise, then I'll give myself the best possible chance to win.

Q) What 2-3 songs are you listening to at the minute?

A) I don't really have any main songs. I listen to pretty much anything within reason haha!

Q) If you could invite 3 celebrities around to your house, who would they be and why?

A) Tiffany Haddish - One of my favourite actresses, I think she's hilarious.

Jennifer Aniston - She's from my favourite TV show; Friends.

Kobe Bryant - Simply because he's a sporting legend.

Q) Tell us your best joke....

A) What did the big flower say to the little flower? "Hey bud"

Q) What are the 2 things you can't live without?

A) My moms cooking and I'm a film lover so definitely films.

Q) What is your favourite motivation quote?

A) The one from Conor McGregor - "I'm cocky in prediction, I'm confident in preparation and I'm always humble in victory or defeat"

Q) What is your favourite film?

A)  Has to be either Harry Potter or The Hunger Games.

Q) One final question, Reece asked us to ask you "Is there any chance of you actually buying a Nando's during one of your meetings?"

A) I will after he pays for the next one because I bet he didn't mention that I bought the last one did he? Haha!!
